RES Software is a long-standing Citrix partner with a large percentage of our customers using RES Software products to support their Citrix deployments. This has been the case since the inception of RES Software (1999) and continues today with deep integration with Citrix’s XenDesktop and XenApp products.
At RES Software we believe that we’re able to provide value to our joint customers by having true integration between RES Workspace Manager and Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp.
In this blog post we will talk about our updated integration with Citrix XenDesktop / XenApp 7.x.
The Value of RES Workspace Manager’s integration with Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp
Out of the feature set that comprises our Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp integration in RES Workspace Manager, as a reminder, I would like to highlight the two most popular functionalities.
Automatic Application Publishing
With our Citrix XenApp Publishing integration when you create a Managed Application, RES Workspace Manager will automatically create and manage all Published Applications in the Citrix farm(s) without the need to do this from Citrix Studio – providing a single point of management and control for all Citrix Published Applications. For a refresher take a look at the video below. The video demonstrates the integration with Citrix XenApp 6.x. The Citrix XenDesktop / XenApp 7.x we are announcing today works in the same way.
This functionality allows you to provide a shortcut to Citrix Published Application in the Start Menu, indistinguishable from a locally installed application. The most important thing about Instant Passthrough is that, because of the context awareness of RES Workspace Manager, the application shortcut will always look the same to the end user but where the application is run is completely dynamic. This makes it very easy to configure that an application will be run locally if the application is installed and if the application is not installed, the application will be delivered from Citrix XenApp – all while the end user has to do is to launch the application in the way there are accustomed to.
Updated version of RES Workspace Manager available with new Citrix functionality
Recently we’ve updated our Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp integration in RES Workspace Manager 2014 SR1 with some much requested new functionality plus full support for the latest versions of Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp – including XenDesktop 7.0, 7.1 and XenDesktop/XenApp 7.5.
Besides full support for Citrix XenDesktop 7.0, 7.1 and XenDesktop/XenApp 7.5 this version of RES Workspace Manager 2014 SR1 includes additional great new features that you should know about:
- Multiple Site and Delivery Controller support – You can now configure Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp integration so that you can now configure different accounts for different Citrix sites. This allows you to create and support complex deployments spanning multiple sites.
- Automatic Publishing Credential Control – In addition, you can now configure which account RES Workspace Manager uses to publish applications in the Citrix Studio. This is a common requirement in larger Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp deployments with RES Workspace Manager where delegation / separation of control is used.
- Session Lingering for XenApp 7.5 – This version of RES Workspace Manager provides Workspace Manager Session Lingering for Citrix XenApp 7.5. You can use session linger to provide a better user experience by eliminating the launch delay between applications. Refer to the release notes on how to configure RES Workspace Manager Session Lingering.
Facilitating XenApp Migrations
When we were designing the updated integration of RES Workspace Manager with Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp, we worked closely with our customers. Many of them reported that they wanted to migrate to a new version of XenApp (7.5 for example) but there was no easy upgrade path from the older version of XenApp.
This new version of RES Workspace Manager 2014 was designed to support XenApp versions ranging from 4.x all the way up to XenApp 7.5. This means you can build two (or more) farm with different versions of Citrix XenApp (for example XenApp 6.5 and 7.5) and manage both these farms from the RES Workspace Manager Console. This way, applications can gradually be migrated from one farm to the other, all from the RES Workspace Manager console without interruptions for the end user, thus enabling the seamless XenApp migration scenario that many customers have asked for.
Typically new functionality like this is made available in a next Service Release of RES Workspace Manager (so that would be Service Release 2) but based on very popular demand we’re happy to announce that we’re able to make this available to all of our customers today.
