RES Software’s 10+ year relationship with Citrix continues with our extensive integration with Citrix’s XenDesktop and XenApp solutions. Many of our customers use our solutions to support their Citrix deployments. We are driven to continually add value for our joint customers, and our latest integrations with XenDesktop and XenApp are examples that build on that commitment.
Previously we detailed our integration between RES Workspace Manager 2014 Service Release 1 with Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp 7.0, 7.1 and 7.5. In this blog, we will highlight some features of our integration with Citrix XenApp 7.6, available today in RES Workspace Manager 2014 Service Release 2.
Multiple Site and Delivery Controller Support
Set up Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp integration to configure different accounts for different Citrix sites. This allows you to create and support complex deployments spanning multiple sites. In the delivery controller field, you can also add DNS Alias for the delivery controller name. For example, this is useful in creating a form of high availability/load balancing in case you do not want to add a specific delivery controller.
Automatic Publishing Credential Control
Additionally, you can configure which account RES Workspace Manager uses to publish applications in the Citrix Studio. This is a common benefit in larger Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp deployments with RES Workspace Manager where delegation/separation of control is used as shown below. This account can be configured globally or per site/delivery controller.
Session Prelaunch and Session Lingering in XenApp 7.6
Prelaunch applications can be created on a XenApp 7.6 server for applications that are managed by RES Workspace Manager. If a Citrix Receiver is started on a client, these prelaunch applications are automatically started. When the user starts the actual managed application, the application will start faster, as all logon actions were already processed when the prelaunch application launched. [Please note, for Session Prelaunch to work, the Citrix server needs to be configured to launch the RES Workspace Composer automatically (Administration > Agents, on the Agents tab, select Automatic for Run Workspace Composer)]
This version of RES Workspace Manager also provides RES Workspace Manager Session Lingering for Citrix XenApp 7.5 and 7.6. You can use session linger to provide a better user experience by eliminating the launch delay between applications. Refer to the release notes on how to configure RES Workspace Manager Session Lingering.
Facilitating XenApp Migrations
When we were designing the updated integration of RES Workspace Manager with Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp, we worked closely with our customers. Many of them reported that they wanted to migrate to a new version of XenApp (7.6 for example), but there was no easy upgrade path from the older version of XenApp.
This new version of RES Workspace Manager 2014 was designed to support XenApp versions ranging from 4.x all the way up to XenApp 7.6. This means that you can build two (or more) farm with different versions of Citrix XenApp (for example XenApp 6.5 and 7.5) and manage both these farms from the RES Workspace Manager Console. This way, applications can gradually be migrated from one farm to the other, all from the RES Workspace Manager console, without interruptions for the end user, thus enabling the seamless XenApp migration scenario that many customers requested
